Ok – if you know me at all, you know I see the world through a different lens! 😄 When I look at this picture, I see a metaphor for life.

Visible Damage

We’re all striving in some way, big or small, to be the pumpkin out front – the one that is seemingly perfect, no visible warts or scars, out in front of the pack (seems to be having the most success and a “perfect life”). Because it’s “perfect”, it’ll demand a higher price and be the one that is picked and purchased.

But I’ve experienced seemingly perfect pumpkins that are actually bruised or even rotten inside!

Many of us relate more with the pumpkin to the left. Our bumps, bruises, warts and scars are more visible to the world. We feel like we’re more exposed, maybe even feel like a fraud – “imposter syndrome”. The vulnerability seems like a weakness and can come under attack from the “perfect” pumpkins, or from other damaged pumpkins who need to hurt someone else so they can feel better. Unless we find just the right opportunity with someone who likes our look and shape and can overlook the scars, or is more concerned with what’s on the inside, we won’t be picked until the other pumpkins are gone and we look like a better choice than what’s left.

Or maybe we have it all together, we aren’t very damaged or we’ve done our work to get healing and someone does choose us… and then they accidentally drop us or in some other way cause a bruise, wound, or scar. Now that we’re damaged, even if it was their fault, they choose to leave us for another “perfect” pumpkin.

The Real Pumpkin Patch

The good news is that, unlike pumpkins, we humans can heal our scars and look more and more like the “perfect” pumpkins. We can find the people who love us for who we are, warts and vulnerabilities and all, and who will walk alongside us and help pick us up when we fall or struggle. We find the people who, especially if they’re the ones who cause the wound, will stay with us, press in, go deeper in relationship and help with the healing process.

Even better news than this is that we have a God who loves us unconditionally. He desires an intimate relationship with us because he has already chosen us. He can bring full healing and restoration, and sees us not for what we do but through the filter of what his Son did for us. If we have chosen Him, He sees us all as perfect pumpkins now, in our current state, even in our brokenness.. warts, scars and all.

Your One Degree step for Today is to press in to healing for one of your wounds. That can mean something different to everyone, so if you need help figuring out what that is for you, reach out for help, support and encouragement!
